Napa, California
The Napa Rifle and Pistol Club (N.R.P.C.) was formed in
1938. It has been 100% NRA since
conception, which means all members must be an NRA member to be in the club.
In
the early 1940’s the local paper, the Napa Register, began noting the weekly
shooting honors of the NRPC’s members.
In those days you would see the names of Frost, Paniagua, Heid and many
more repeatedly mentioned as top shooters of the Napa Valley. The paper also noted proudly the many times
our “Napa Shooters” took top honors in many competitions; like the California
State Gallery Championship, the U.S. Title, and the Hearst Citizen Marksmanship
Competition, to name just a few. In 1954 the
N.R.P.C. moved from the shooting range on Silverado Trail to an old pumice
quarry on Monticello Road. At that time
the club was surrounded by oak trees and acres of wildland. The members built a clubhouse, and indoor and
outdoor ranges and spent years teaching our local Napans gun safety and how to
be sharpshooters for careers or competition. In years past, you could enter the rustic
clubhouse with walls of knotty pine and see so much history. One would immediately notice the trophies,
awards and pictures filling the room of its proud members’
accomplishments. As you entered, you
could go to the left and use the indoor range or stay in the main room and
visit with other members or go to a board meeting. Club members also
enjoyed the outdoor ranges which included a 100 yard rifle range, 50 yard and
25 yard pistol ranges, and a trap shooting range. Members could use their own guns to sharpen
their shooting skills or they had access to the clubs’ guns which were stored
in gun safes in the clubhouse. The N.R.P.C. were
known for their many classes which included a Women’s and Men’s handgun safety
course, Hunters safety course, concealed weapons training, junior and senior
four position small-bore and so much more. This WAS the Napa
Rifle and Pistol Club before October 8th, 2017.
On that day, the most destructive wildfires of Northern California’s
History and specifically the Atlas Peak fire, took our beloved club from all of
its 440 members. The fire spread so
quickly there wasn’t time to save anything from the flames. Nothing was spared not even the gun safes or
the guns inside of them. Today, the land has
been cleared, the soil tested, the burned oaks removed but the members must now
figure out how to fund the new outdoor ranges, indoor range and club house. Our
plan is to rebuild the outdoor ranges first and then the indoor range and
Clubhouse. The Board members began working right away dealing with the
insurance company, the City of Napa, and contractors to try to get their club
rebuilt. Unfortunately, the
process to rebuild has been challenging due to the club being severely
underinsured, due to the age of our building.
We are also constrained by our use permit which allows only 440
members. We are asking for donations
from our fellow NRA members nationwide to help us rebuild this wonderful club
that serves the Napa Valley and is the ONLY club in this county. Our members are anxious to get back to
practicing their shooting skills, the classes and the friendly competitions.
The members and the Board of the Napa Rifle and Pistol Club would be forever
grateful to any and all NRA members who would be willing to donate to help us
rebuild our shooting ranges and club.
